A few interesting differences between a 1946 show and shows today:
  • A  separate benching fee was paid when a dog was entered for the show.
  • A price may be included with the dogs entry if it is for sale. A commission will be paid to the show society if the dog is sold at the show.
  • Equal 1st prizes may be given. If this is the case then the prize money from 1st and 2nd will be added together and divided between the equal winners.
  • Dogs had to stay until the close of the show. No early removals were given.
  • A dog could be disqualified if it was found to be blind, of suffering from night blindness - (what we now call prcd GPRA).
  • Definition of classes – It wasn’t just how many classes a dog had won that governed which  classes it could be entered for. The amount of prize money that had been awarded for previous wins was also mentioned. The Yellow Labrador Club gave special monetary awards for its members at this show. This was also carried on by the Yellow Lab Club until fairly recently at the Labrador Club of Scotland Championship show.
  • Prizes were also given in both guineas and pounds in 1946.
  • Classes were divided by colour (blacks and yellows only) at the time. There were mixed classes too.
  • Dogs were entered in many more classes than they are now. Sometimes they could win all  their classes and go on to the major award at the end of the day.
  • The majority of the entry were northern dogs but some exhibitors travelled greater distances. The most notable being Lorna, Countess Howe (Banchory) who travelled all the way from Berkshire. Another well-known kennel, the Liddleys; belonging to Mr & Mrs Saunders, also came from Berkshire too.
