HISTORIC CLUB WORKING EVENTS
1974.  Below is the running card for a Two Day Open Field Trial at Ford Estate.  Ford Estate is historically linked to our club President, The Lord Joicey and coincidentally this two day Open was held on the same dates in October as our Two Day Open Trial at Whitfield in our 90th Anniversary year of 2013!
Picture
On Open 2 day Trial at Ford, Northumberland in October 1974 (strangely the same dates of 4th and 5th as our Two Day Open at Whitfield 2013!) 24 dogs permitted in the Open, as we do now.
Picture
And how nice that an Anonymous donator chooses to award £2 for the best dog on a runner! H.M. The Queen is up here again too! A lot more kennel names are recognisable as still being very active.
1973.  All Aged Stake (Trial) at Millfield, with again the  hand written comments.  Note that the running cards had to be paid for by competitors!
Picture
16 Dogs permitted in the 1973 All Aged Stake at Millfield. Miss Evelyn Smith was now Secretary and Treasurer and it would appear started to charge people for a copy of the running card. Perhaps the way of the future?
Picture
Now the names of the perpetual N&D trophies become more ‘recognisable’ with the events. Still seemed an awful lot of running in and ‘whining’. Despite No. 9 running in (which seems a common occurrence of the time) and getting the wrong bird – the dog still takes third place!
1972 example of an All Aged Field Trial.  The notes that accompany the running card  describe  a lovely day.  Some people will remember these venues as well as  the people taking part.  Let us know if you have any memories to add.
Picture
Millfield All Aged Stake October 1972 where it is nicely noted that "the game was plentiful on good and varied ground. The scent was good to patchy (especially in turnips) and the weather was good – dry but cold. The dogs ‘put themselves out’ – some good and some not so good. Good shooting, wonderful guns and the club hadn’t been on better ground this year. There was a happy atmosphere where the Top dogs all tried on 2 drives"
Picture
It seems that around this time running in started to mean elimination looking at the scoring. We still have the Wild and Out of Control cropping up but much less noticeable than in prior years
1972 Northumberland and Durham Field Trial Schedule.    Note the minimal regulations of the time and some of the wording.
Picture
Now this is a nice simple - not many rules - Field Trial Schedule. And only One trial per year!
From 1971 we have a copy of an Open Working Test Running Card.  My hat goes off to the secretaries of the era; and many of us will remember those manual typewriters used to produce the running card.  It seems the front of the cards are partially pre-printed on perhaps a drum or  early Xerox duplicator?  Note that Working Test placings were paid money as their prize - as well as a trophy for the winner.
Picture
Open Working Test for 20 dogs only; held at Cliffe Hall, Piercebridge in May 1971. Seems only one judge so they had a busy day!
Picture
The running card was of a standard that would shame many produced today! Interesting to see that the tests were marked out of 10 and not 20 in those days. H.M. The Queen sent her dogs up to our working tests too!
A 1968  Puppy and Non-Winner Field Trial at Millfield, where one dog ran in .....TWICE!
Picture
How times have changed! Ran in – TWICE!!! Some of the comments are not particularly complimentary.
Picture
Puppy and Non-Winners Trial at Millfield, Nr Wooler. How long ago since we saw phone numbers depicted as the Town and only 4 numbers?
In 1967, this was the Kennel Club Field Council  recommendations to Field Trial Committee - slightly shorter than the ones today?

In 1966 and some years after; the club held Field Trials for Puppies and Non-Winners. Some of the comments and  conditions of entry are quite alien  nowadays and refreshingly humorous - unintentionally of course.  This one was at Wynyard Park, Stockton.
Picture
In 1966 it would seem those puppies (up to 2 years old) and non winners - loved to "run wild" and "run in"

Field Trials for Puppies and Non-Winners! And look at that prize money for 45 years ago!
